No, they didn't. Not even close, really. The TV series ended about halfway into the manga and even then did not use all of the earlier stories.

Ranma 1/2 TV "caught up" to the manga in the middle of its run. As a result of not having further manga plot to work from, a lot of the later TV episodes are "filler" that doesn't take the story anywhere and doesn't come from the manga.

The Ranma 1/2 manga continued for quite a while after the TV series ended. Some of the manga story arcs were used in the OAVs (for example the contrary jewel, the cursed doll inn). I think the manga-derived stories make for the best OAVs.

But most of the manga is not represented in the anime. The big battle against Saffron filled the final two volumes of the manga, but is not present anywhere in Ranma anime. Looking through the Japanese volumes, I see these story arcs in the various volumes:

v.17 - Nabiki is Ranma's fiancee (TV season 5)
v.17 - Scribble panda (TV season 6)
v.18 - Pantyhose Taro (TV season 6)
v.19 - Ukyo's Sauce (TV season 6)
v.20 - Shishihokodan (TV season 7)
v.21 - Cheerleading-fu (TV season 7)
v.22 - Mood-changing brooch (OAV)
v.23 - Fishing rod of love (none)
v.24 - Herb saga 1 (none)
v.25 - Herb saga 2 (none), Hinako (OAV)
v.26 - Strange Forest (OAV)
v.27 - Tunnel of lost Love (OAV)
v.28 - Kumon Ryu (none)
v.29 - Phoenix (Movie 3), Pink+Link (none)
v.30 - Akari Returns, Miss Hinako 2 (none)
v.31 - Vengeful Spirit Doll (OAV)
v.32 - Rouge, White Lily (none)
v.33 - Mushroom of ages (none)
v.34 - Bust battle (none)
v.35 - Two Ranmas, Konatsu (none)
v.36 - Ranma's mother finds out (none)
v.37 - Phoenix Saga 1 (none)
v.38 - Phoenix Saga 2 (none)

As far as I recall, vol. 31 (OAV) is the latest of the 38 volumes to have any of its chapters represented in the anime.... and vol. 21 (ten volumes earlier yet) is the latest to be in the TV anime (which ended after 7 seasons).

I think that folks who are only familiar with the anime might enjoy reading the manga. It contains a lot of original stories which are better than the anime "filler" -- and even though the story is a faded memory in Japan (i.e., no additional anime is likely), there is good "new" material in the manga.
