Please name the book that scared you the most and why.
Fo me it was Pet Sematary by Stephen King - far better than the movie; when I finshed it (at age twenty) I threw the book across the room and slept with the light on for two weeks

"Thinner" was creepy from the Richard Bachman days. The movie was actually as good as the book to me.

"The Shining" was a horrific novel as well. I thought that they did a pretty good job with the ABC TV movie a few years ago, I always wondered how they would do the animal hedge moving thing and it wasn't bad. I did miss Scatman Crothers as Dick Hollarann though, he was good in the 1980 movie version. Too bad that they didn't let SK have his way with the first film.

I saved a hard copy of "Eye of the Dragon" for my daughter to read when she is a little older. You know what creeped me out about the book? The character Flagg - he also showed up in "The Stand" - Another awesome book.
I have read all of the Dean Koontz books and love his style as well. Phantoms was scary. However, SK has always hung out a little more in my subconscious.

In their own venue they are equally scary. For me, it was Stephen Kings short story (name forgotten) about the guy who got himself a Gypsy curse, I haven't been able to eat strawberry pie since reading it. I just finished Koontz's "The husband" which was good but not that scary, I've started King's "Everything's eventual", a collection of his short stories. Let you know later how good it is.
EDIT: Thinner, you're right, thanks

I had that same kind of reaction to Pet Cemetary!! I also felt that way about Dean Koontz's Phantoms though, so...
I really like both of them alot, but I'd have to say that though Dean Koontz is my preferred author, I think that Stephen King is scarier. With Koontz, the main characters pretty much always live until the end of the book. I guess in a way, this should just show how genius Koontz is, because one still wants to read his books and are anticipating bad things, when past history tells us that his main characters will still be living at the end. Stephen King, on the other hand, kills off anyone and everyone in his books. Plus, he writes about stuff in a way that is just disturbed!

*laughs* "Pet Semetary" was the scariest for me, too! I read it alone in my apartment when I was 21 and it scared the $%^ out of me!
I like both authors, but I think Stephen King is the most consistently scary for me. Almost every one of his books that I have read, I like--even the ones that are un-Stephen King-ish, like "The Eye of the Dragon."
Dean Koontz has a great style, too, and though I have only recently started to read him, he seems to be hit-and-miss. A couple of his novels I LOVE (such as "Odd Thomas") but now and then I come across one that I can't get into at all.
By the way, I still own Pet Semetary, but I'm too scared of it to read it a second time. 0_0 I have "The Shining" too. I haven't read it yet, but if it's scarier than the movie (the girls in the blue dresses at the end of the hallway--eep!) then it will freak me out almost as much as P.S.

The both have their moments but I think King's style scares the bejesus out of us because he writes about things that really SCARE us. "It" was a very freaky book and Pet Semetary" was up there as well. Strangers and Phantoms by Koontz was up there as well. Read The Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill. Very scary Ghost Story by King's son.

I think King is probably the scarier, but Koontz's books aren't quite so far out sometime, so they have the realistic factor. My fav of Koontz is either False Memory or The Door to December. My fav of King is either The Stand or Cell.

Right now i would have to say....Everything's Eventual. its a collection of short stories that were pretty creepy. i am reading From a Buick 8 right now and its cool. I say Stephen King by far. He is so good at making things so vivid and eerie. Also he throws a twist in the works when you least expect it and it throws you for a loop. Stephen King rocks.
