I have a 2000 Chevy Cav that died on me today. I was driving and it just stalled, and won't restart. I still seem to have power since the lights and radio are still working. I've just had the spark plugs replaced so I know that isn't the problem. Anyways it turns over but just won't start. Someone had suggested it was the starter motor... does that sound right? Is that costly? Is it easy to replace? I don't know too much about cars but have a friend coming out from the U.K. in a few days who does and would like to have some ideas about what is wrong. :)
Thanks

If the car is turning over then the starter is working....sounds like a problem unrelated to that. I would check spark, Fuel, and go from there first. get a repair manual from the local part store and read up under "troubleshooting"

this is a tuffy, since it could be a number of things.were the spark plugs installed properly? check to make sure ,they are in tight.do any of your friends have an engine decoder? hook up the decoder so as to read the (if any) codes it registers.if the motor turns over then it can't be the starter motor, unless it barely turns over.also the more times you try to start it,the more gas you're putting in the cylinders, thus making it harder to start.you might have to buy a new set of spark plugs and install them . thank you!

If it "turns over" it's not the starter or battery.
Fuel or ignition problem is the best guess.
If it sputtered & died I'd guess fuel, otherwise ignition.
If you're not sure, check the ignition first, it's easier.
Might even just be a loose wire at the distributor cap.
(We wish).
Best of luck.

Could be the ignition module. Check for spark at the plug wire.

if the engine turns over it is not the starter...sounds like fuel pump...or crank sensor...or maybe coil pack....pop off a plug wire put an old spark plug on wire hold it close to but not touching metal...if you have a spark..it is probably fuel pump...

a push button only bypasses the ignition clylinder not the starter itself. starter is in the front of the motor and dead easy to get off to get tested....

IF IT TURNS OVER IT IS NOT YOUR STARTER , YOU LOST POWER TO YOUR IGNITION SYSTEM SOMEWHERE
