I already have the numbers matching rebuilt 727 torqueflite mated to the 383

That would be way too cool. The 383 should work fine...make sure to get a strong 727 torqueflite behind it to get power to the wheels. If you can afford the bucks and find one to fit, you should put a posi rear-end in as well.

oh yeah it'll work but be ready to fab some motor mounts. you will need to test fit the motor and then the trans but this is called hot roddin' at its finest :)
