There is some scarring. If you are African American, your scarring may be worse because of a tendency to develop keloids, or raised scars. The length of the surgery varies by how much tissue you plan to have removed.
You can expect to have drains in place for about a week following surgery- these are tubes with receptacles for fluid collection at the end to help reduce swelling and pain. You will have to keep up with how much fluid and what type of fluid drains, and empty the collection chambers.
You will be on antibiotics- be sure to take ALL of them.
As for your nipples- talk to your doctor about leaving them in place. It can be done! If the doctor you are dealing with doesn't do that type of procedure- GO TO ONE WHO DOES. That way you retain all sensation AND the ability to breastfeed.
Your scars will diminish over time, and an aid like Mederma to reduce scar apearance after initial wound healing can make a HUGE difference. Good luck!

Large, sagging breasts can plague women because they restrict activities and often cause physical discomfort. The symptoms of female breast hypertrophy may result in persistent, debilitating pain. In such cases, the condition can be alleviated or, in most cases, eliminated, through breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty).
At the women's site below, you'll find lots of information on breast reduction surgery including what to expect and questions to ask the doctor. Good luck!

I have personally known 2 women who had it done.
You will scar, but they try to do they best they can. Since they cut around the nipple and remove a lot of tissue, chances are you will not retain sensation.
Even with the scarring, in most cases the shape is so much better. The nipple sits where it should, and you can wear better bras and have a more proportioned profile.

This site is a wealth of information:
http://www.breasthealthonline.com
Scarring takes about a year to fade, Mederma and Scarguard help lighten the scars. Mine are barely noticeable.
I was in NO pain after my surgery.
Nipple sensation can take up to a year to return. Mine returned in three months.
Remember that PATIENCE is the key to recovery. Ask your PS (NOT YA!) any questions you may have about anything that may come up.
Mine was three hours and I stayed overnight in the hospital.
You will not regret this surgery, good luck and contact me if you need to!

My sister who works in the Medical Profession says it's the One Surgery that doesn't often get talked about, but is considered extremely painful and many women have problems afterwards...It all depends on who is doing the surgery and the recovery. Good Luck
