crknapp79 (below) So, according to you, although people have been witnesses to shootings, they arm themselves (legally or other) NOT for self defense? Wow!!!! And they are all black too?

agree that a firearm is a tool. Unfortunately, it does, at times, fall into the wrong hands.

Good question. I have a friend who has a carry license, and she firmly believes it's for self-defense. But it's odd... her view of the world is as a really dangerous place, as opposed to my view of the world. Neither of us has known someone who was attacked or suffered a home invastion in which a gun would have been of any use, but she's still more convinced than I that it's a likelihood, and not just a low possibility. Does her feeling safer against what could be a non-existent or low chance threat count as "self esteem?" That term seems too trivial....

Self esteem is a loose term. Do you mean collectors, in which case there are many. I believe that most folks also have self-defense in mind when it comes to firearms. Why should the crooks be the only ones to bear arms??

Don't know the answer. For myself, I own a rifle for home defense. I would get a handgun for self defense away from home, but I think I might be a little too hot-headed to be carrying one.

Having ownership of a firearm for esteem reasons, is more of an urban (black) thing. And, in most all of those cases, it's an illegally owned (not registered) fire arm at that. And it is for that reason the rest of us law abiding citizens carry one, to protect ourselves from those who cannot be a man themselves, without their piece.
