Abortion is a personal and/or moral issue, and it can be a religious or medical issue. In no way should it have ever become a political issue. It is not the governments job to regulate the morality of it's citizens. Unfortunately many people have forgotten that.

I couldn't agree more ! I think this is a religious, or moral issue, and nothing that the federal government, or Supreme court should meddle in.
It's the religious right that won't leave this one alone, and women's groups have no choice,(how Punny!), but to get involved. In fact,I believe that the pro-choice, planned parenthood folks have actually softened their stance, and are much more receptive to offering alternatives to abortion these days. But the narrow-minded, rabid pro-life people still cheer when some nut case blows up a clinic, or assaults a Doctor.
If all these fringe freaks would get behind one of the issues you mentioned, we could have secure borders, alternative energy, and a sane foreign policy in months. Maybe a National Health plan would interest them,.....Oh, wait, young girls might need birth control !, Damn, there goes that rational idea !
Thanks for a good, logical, un-biased question :-)

This is a serious issue in Presidential Debates, only because there are openings on the Supreme court. A few Conservative judges could over turn Roe v Wade and make abortion illegal in the U.S. again.
Oh, and just a little FYI..If all those aborted from the time of it's legalization until now were alive, we would not have the jobs for Mexicans to fill, they would be filled by living breathing Americans.

Abortion is a window into the soul of the candidate.
It is a barometer for what the Supreme Court may look like under that administration.
It is a litmus test for consistency.
I agree that it gets way to much play and there is little expectation that roe v wade will be overturned. Nonetheless it does need to be in the political debate if for no other reason but to identify the candidates moral character.

I'm pro-choice. I agree the issue will never be "solved," but the president is the person who appoints supreme court justices, and they're the only people who can uphold or revoke Roe v. Wade, so it's an issue.
Still, it's only one issue of so very many.....

To some people it is an ethical issue. Most politicians are only going to tell you what you want to hear so they win your vote. George Bush had lots of support at the war when he lied to About weapons of mass destruction. But once he got voted in, we can't get rid of him soon enough.

Yes, those issues are important.
I'd suppose that if I were in your shoes I'd be thinking the same thing.
The issues that are up front and short term should be addressed!
Abortion, however, looks towards the future. Who will our future leaders be if they aren't born? Who will run the oil companies if they aren't born? Who will be the soldiers to confront the terrorists?

It's a ''wedge issue'. In other words, one of those highly charged, emotional issues that each party uses to drive a wedge between themselves and the "other guys". They also like to parade them out for fundraisers and election time to remind us that we are so 'fortunate' to have this or that party representing 'our interests'.
See? The point of your real question got lost in the fray. Yes, "wedge issue" is a very accurate description! But you already knew the "grab" factor when you phrased your question. :-)

Quote of the century
"The American Indians found out what happens when you don't control immigration"
But you are correct. There will never be a meeting of the minds on the abortion issue. So lets do get on to other things.

It's only an issue because there is a large voting block at stake.
