My apartment complex offers free high speed internet service. They have installed routers on some of the buildings. What do I need to purchase for my desktop to receive the signal. Thanks.

I would suggest a USB adapter. They work better then PCI cards in my opinion and easier to install.

An 802.11g wireless network card. For a laptop you can get a PC (used to be called PCMCIA) card. You can also get a USB wireless network card that will work on either desktops or laptops.
