Particles in the air filter out most of the color spectrum with red being the last to go. This effect can also be seen in low light conditions and in deep water.

Any time there is small particulate matter in the air the sky will appear red (especially near sunrise or sunset).
Pollution, smoke (from fires or volcanoes), dust (perhaps from high winds over desert areas) are all small particles that can scatter the red wavelengths in sunlight to colour the sky red.

lots of smoke and/or dust in the air case the sky to be red because the shorter wavelengths get by easier.
