I'm not sure what "fate" and "destiny" have to do with "mind over matter"...
The basic concept is simple - by thinking (or KNOWING) that you are good at something WILL make you better at whatever it is!
The only place where the mind can DEFEAT matter is inside the Matrix - where you can use your mind to fly, dodge bullets, bend spoons, and other things like that ;);););)

I dont think that people just drop down dead because they're expecting it but if it is from medical reasons, the predictions are based on the best information available. If a person hears that they will die on a certain date, they may loose the will to live and just give up trying. Others however, do not accept this and push through the predicted date or, very occasionaly, may recover.
In any case, by thinking positively or negatively, it will have a relative effect on your performance or ability in everything. If you go into something ,a marathon for example, expecting yourself to fail, you are probably not going to make it past the finish line. If, on the otherhand, you have a positive attitude, and keep telling yourself that you WILL complete the race, you are far more likely to achieve you expectations because you will push yourself further than you beleive is possible.
Its not always a case of "mind over matter", but alot can be accomplished by thinking positively and blocking out negative stimuli. Pain for example, is another hinderance to sucess and if you are able to ignore this and push through, you are more likely to achieve. The mind is a powerful weapon, maybe stronger than any muscle, if it is used to its full potential.

No joke, I was thinking about this just the other day. It's crazy. Like if you think about something long and hard enough it'll happen. Or if you have got something set in your mind, like say a certain word (or anything), you'll start to see it everywhere. Mostly because you're looking for it, and expecting it, but it's still weird. I find it really interesting. I don't have an answer to your question though, sorry. (:

I learnet a trick some years ago, and it worked - a couple of times - though she might have come to my door anyway!
Imagine your 'want' in a halo of blue white light, and imagining it coming to you. Hold it there warmly for as long as you are able.
It's as simple as that ~ without guarantees.

BECAUSE BEFORE YOU BELIEVE IN SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT FIRST HOW YOU PERCEIVE THE THOUGHT ALLOWS YOU TO BELIEVE IT OR NOT. THE ACTUAL BELIEF MOLDS EVERY THING AROUND YOU (EG. YOUR THOUGHTS) TO IT BECOMES TRUE TO YOU .
