It's a symbolic way of showing that you're starting over, beginning something new. Most people have similar rituals, you probably haven't noticed.
Whenever I'm about to go through a major change or something really big and life changing happens to me, I dye my hair a new color. Here are some of the colors and situations:
1) Getting into college: Fire Red
2) Moving into my first apartment: Blonde
3) Starting a relationship w/my first bf: Black
4) Graduating from college: Light Brown
5) Changing careers: Auburn
