I always used intel myself then i built a amd dual core and studied it. Amd has a integraded memory controller so your front side bus speed is the same as the processor.

On intel their memory controlled is seperate from the processor so the front side buss is 533 mghtz or 800 mghtez or the newest for dual core is only 1066 mghtz.

How i look at it information goes down a highway if it is intel dual core it travels the same as 1066 buses side to side. big highway huh, Now amd dual core say just a 2.0 dual core travels at 4000 buses side to side (even bigger highway).

That is because it is dual core meaning 2 processors in one die both going at 2.0 gig. So now i only use dual core amd because the information it can push thru is so much lager.

On graphics cards you have the same case with nvidia and ati. The pci-e slots travel at 16x and you can use 2 cards the same as 1 like the sli setup or the crossfire set up with ati.

When you put 2 nvidia cards in a sli set up it slows both slots down to 8x for a maxium of 16x for both cards where as ati keeps both slots at 16x so no matter how good the card it wont perform any better than the speed of information it pushes. so ati puses 32 times totall and nvida 16x totall.

There are many arguments different people can use but in the end it is which one can make information travel faster which makes your computer faster.

if the choice is Intel Core2Duo or AMD x2 then its c2d
if the choice is the newest absolute latest and greatest highest priced ones then AMD may have the edge with native quad cores (assuming their out and you can get them in your area)
if the choice is Pentium/PentD vs AMD 64/x2 then AMD
