I was ironing on my bed. When I went to get a shirt out of the closet, the iron tipped over, leaving a burn mark in the mattress. It left a tear on the top layer of my mattress. Is there a patch I could use, or some other method, to cover the tear in the mattress? I'm just worried the tear will spread, causing the padding to come out. If anyone has an idea how to repair this, I would appreciate it. Thank you very much for your help!

I would first sew it up and apply an iron-on patch to make it stronger. Then get a quilted mattress cover.

All you need to do is put an iron on patch on the tear. The top panel on all traditional mattresses is quilted to prevent upholstery shifting... this quilting also prevents tears from growing out of control.
A simple patch is all you need.

yeah go get a curved upholstery needle and what ever you want to patch it with, then once done turn your mattress over

Try duct tape. It will lie flat, and hold the edges together. Put the torn spot on the bottom, and keep the good side up.
