I want a motocross style bike to trail ride. I am afraid that I will grow out of a 250 four stroke to fast. I am considering late model yz250's and cr250r's. I would like to know if the 450's power is worth the extra cost and maintenance or if I should continue looking at 250's.

One thing to take into consideration - 450cc 4 stroke dirt bikes are extremely hard to start.
You need a very strong leg to kick them.
If you stall out halfway up a hill, you might not have the strength left, or enough balance to re-start it.
If you do get an open class 4 stroke for trail riding, get one with electric start.
I use my cr250 mainly in the trails and it's great.
It has plenty of power and then some.

Mate bought my first dirt bike last year a YZ 250 and I love the damn thing!

I've ridden on the road for just on ten years but these things haul ***!
I weigh nearly 90 kgs and it will still wheel spin flat out on gravel roads.
The only thing though, when you get tired it will let you know.
It's spit me off a couple of times just to let you know it needs your full attention!

Thats what I love about though!

Go for it, they're cheaper and easier to maintain if you look after them. You should get a manual as well. That goes with any bike! I always do. Valuable source of info.

just for trail riding??? no extreme track attempts???

if truly so, either a CR or YZ 250 2 stroke will be fine and I would add a 10 oz flywheel weight to tone down the peaky 2 stroke engine for trail riding which will add torque...

They make some pretty big 250cc dirtbikes.... and you could go with a 4 stroke which tends to be bigger. I personally like 2 stroke better though. theres just something about hitting powerband that is almost orgasmic..................
