I've had two pap smears, the first one they said it came back with abnormal cells, the second one they found blood and abnormal cells ( might have been getting off my period, can't remember)

What could cause this?

Um, they did switch my birth control pills, and what about having a really bad ingrown toenail? i had one the past year and half, when it started coming back abnormal and it was badly infected, now I got it taken care of, and am on antibiotics. Do you think it was because of that infection? or no?

no, the doc just told me to come back again. didnt say if it was anything, but i read that a bacterial infection (caused by the toe can cause it also) it started showing up abnormal as soon as my toe got infected so i'm not sure.

A yeast infection, which can be caused by taking antibiotics, can cause an abnormal pap, especially if your doctor is using the older type of smear. It's probably infection, your doctor should have checked for that at your second pap, if they didn't, make an appointment with a gynocologist who's better suited for this type of problem.

I had an atypical pap a few years ago, and the follow-up was abnormal. The colposcopy (oh, what fun--not!) showed nothing of concern. I haven't had an abnormal once since. I have no idea why those came back abnormal.

Chances are, the docs will have you come back for paps every six months until you have two years' worth of normal paps. There may be no explanation they can find for an abnormal pap. It just--happened.

I doubt changing the pill would cause this, nor do I think an ingrown toenail would affect it.

First you need to know the exact wording on each pap smear. If your pap came back with "ASCUS" Atypical Cells of Undetermined Signifigance, and was negative for HPV, you would follow up with your gyn in 1 year. If it came back "ASCUS" HPV positive, you should have been scheduled for a colposcopy within 30 days of the first abnormal hpv + result. During a colposcopy, the doctor will "paint" your cervix with a dilluted vinegar solution and then look at your cervix using a large magnifying instrument. If there are abnormal cells on the surface of your cervix, the vinegar will be absorbed by them and show up white. If that happens, the doctor will most likely want to biopsy that area. That can be done in the office and most people don't feel anything although some feel a "pinch". If you have anything ASCUS HPV positive or above, you should be followed closely by your gyn until you've had at least 3 normal pap smears in a row.
Oh, the infected toenail has nothing to do with your pap smear results.

I'm sorry, but there is NO WAY you could have 'abnormal cells' in your pap smear because you had an ingrown toenail, or are on antibiotics.
Having 'abnormal cells' does NOT mean that you have cancer. It does mean that you will have to have 'further tests done' to find out 'why' you had abnormal cells on your cervix.
I had an 'abnormal pap smear' and they did a 'cutting biopsy' and said I would need 'further surgery' ... but they also said that I had 'ten years' before I'd 'get cancer.' I was newly married, so I didn't have the 'further surgery' ... and when I had my next pap smear done (eight years later) my pap smear was 'completely normal.'
I'm not saying that you don't have cancer, either ... I'm just saying that it is in YOUR BEST INTEREST to have the 'further tests' as soon as possible, and only THEN 'make up your mind' what you need to 'worry about' and/or 'do.'
Good luck ... I'll be praying for you! I know it's 'scary' right now, but you WILL BE OKAY ... GOD WILL BE WATCHING OVER YOU!

A Pap smear allows your doctor to look at the cells from your cervix (the lower part of your womb) and see if there are any problems. An abnormal Pap smear means that the cells of your cervix have shown some slightly abnormal changes. The most common cause of an abnormal pap is HPV. If there were white blood cells found in your smear that is a sign of inflammation which is also very common. The important thing is to talk to your Dr about the type of abnormal cells that were found and see what they suggest.

Good question...I am going for my follow-up pap smear next week to retest for an abnormal result that came in April of this year. I don't really know what it is so, I'm playing the waiting game right now.

If you had two abnormal paps, didn't the GYN tell you what it might be?? Did she mention HPV to you? I don't think it has anything to do with your ingrown toenail either...

Hope all goes well with you.......

No. Usually, when you have abnormal cells, it is isolated to a specific cause... not your ingrown toe.

You are going to need to go back for a colposcopy. It's a telescope-looking things like a giant magnifying glass. She'll spread some stuff on the cervix and take a good look. She may decide to take some biopsies.

An abnormal result means that cells which are showing abnormal growth patterns have been found on the slide. The abnormality found is explained in the report from the laboratory.

Did your doctor not go over the results with you?!

Its either HPV,,,or you just have abnormal cells..
It has nothing to do with ingrown toenails, birth control, or the color of your nail polish...honey its just life. You will prob get a biopsy done, and then they can better tell...i think I answered this question for you earlier today..??

no,i don't think it has anything to do with your toe.also, don't worry yourself too much about this,i know alot of women (including me)that has had a pap smear come back abnormal.your doctor should of suggested a biopsy, sounds scary, you'll be OK...they just go in a take a little piece and test it for cancer.which you probably do not have,so don't worry too much..OK?the biopsy is uncomfortable,it will sting and then you might cramp a little while but Advil should help that.good luck,i really think you will be OK!
