Try Project Guttenberg and World Wide School. The stuff there is in the public domain, so it's old material but it's free to view.

Most online libraries do not give you everything to read for free but there are some where you can read older novels for free.

Here are my favorites:

www.baen.com

or free poetry:

www.poems.com

There's also Project Gutenberg but I don't have the web site in hand, just type it in a search engine and it should come up.
