HP appears to be using several models of motherboards/chipsets that have x16 PCIe support. To be SURE that x16 PCie is present on the motherboard, better open the case and take a peek.
Take note that 8500GT up to 8600GTS consume 40 watts or more on the +12V rail. If your current power supply is pretty weak on the +12V rail, your PC might have difficulty with a fast discrete card. You may have to upgrade power supply.
