I've only had a manicure once in my life, and that was for prom. They filed my nails, cut my cuticles (eww), and painted them. It was like $15 plus tip and I really wasn't impressed to ever get them done again.
The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to file your own nails, buff them, and then paint them yourself. It really does take some practice. I have found though, some kinds of nail polish are just easier to paint on than others - sometimes it depends on the polish itself, but other times on the brush that comes attached to the bottle. I have more luck with brushes that have shorter strands, because they're easier for me to control with my non-dominant hand.
You could always try this and use clear nail polish, since clear doesn't matter if you "color inside the lines" or not. ;) At least till you get the hang of doing it yourself. And you can keep a bottle of nail polish remover there just in case you get frusterated and give up... I've been there. :X
But if you're buying nail polish, shake it and if you can, open it to make sure it's not already clumpy. I made the mistake of buying two bottles of gorgeous colored nail polish, only to get home and realize they were just goopy and wouldn't go on no matter what I tried. :/
I've heard that getting fake nails at a salon really wears down your real nails, too, but they seem to have an aire of sophistication around them... as if to say, "I have the money to get my nails done, so I'm going to flaunt it!"
But hey, they're just fingernails. They'll grow back. You could always go to a salon, see if you like it. Also, ask friends/family/coworkers for recommendations, or if you see someone with awesome nails, ask where they get theirs done. A lot of times that I do this, people tell me they've done them themselves. :)

yes i can tell you its worth it going to the beauty salon to have your nails done. I am a guy and i like to get my fingernails done at the salon. When i go to the salon the lady will ask me what i want to have done to my nails and i most of the time get a french manicure with the white free edge. I also get my toenails done with the french pedicure to match my fingernails.

Yes, I think manicures are worth the money. It's the only way nail polish stays on my nails & lasts for 2 weeks.
If you just want to buff your nails, then you can DIY. Here's how: http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-file-and-buff-your-nails

it kinda depends. i hate doing my own nails, it always looks yucky too. But when i get my nails done, it looks good, but starts chipping in about 2 days. If you have healthy shiny nails, then it should last you about a week. plus, its always fun to pamper yourself.

Yes, as long as your not the sporty type because then you'll ruin them in a short amount of time. Just make sure to stay away from things like dish-washing and they will stay pretty fixed for awhile.

Yes just don't do it too much or you will damage your nails and if you have to do sports or type or write they might break or chip
