When I change the engine of my car, will the odometer be automatically reset or should we have to reset it manually? I have a Ford Crown Victoria 1993 model. I bought it from a colleague recently and the car is running pretty smoothly. My colleague told me that the engine was changed recently. The car has covered 2,30,000 miles. Is there a possibility that odometer was not reset when the engine was changed or does that get reset automatically?

I mean to ask. If I had my engine changed in the car then would be odometer reading becomes zero automatically or should it be reset to zero since this is a new engine now.

The odometer does not reset. The only way to reset it is to replace it with a new one.

Never does reset. It is against the law to change the mileage on it. It is suppose to tell you how many miles the car has been driven. Changing the motor has nothing to do with it. I would make a note of how many miles was on the odometer when the engine was put in. That way you will know how many miles are on the engine.

That is illegal and honest mechanics will refuse to do it.
You must record the mileage when the engine is pulled. That should be revealed to the next buyer and so on and so on. From that reading, the new mileage can be calculated, and by addition the total mileage is available to any buyer.
If this was not done at the previous engine replacement, then one cannot determine the mileage on that engine.
Even if the odometer fails to function, this should be done. However, with no mileage recorded after malfunction, it must be revealed to the next buyer.

It is illegal to rollback an odometer, even when you put in a new engine. The # of miles represented doesnt just show the damage the engine has taken, but also the body and framework.

the wear is on more parts than just the engine in a car.
at some point the frame will wear out.
the mileage should never be reset, and its illegal to do so.
the number you read is the amount on the car, did they give you paperwork about what mileage the engine was replaced ?

no its not automatically re-set,even when the engine is replaced ,the only way you can change it is to replace it,id just write the mileage down and keep track of it like that, its easier and cheaper to do it this way, if the odometer stops working than id replace it,good luck on it.

Absolutely not, it is against federal law to alter the reading on an odometer in a vehicle.
