Yes, Barry Bonds.. his homerun ball worth 300 to 400k.. Not bad... huh... well, relative to my homeruobballs... Alas, but McGuire's lesser feat fetches 3 to 4 million... Ok, so of course there is no racism here..The reason for the discrepancy is rather obvious...Answer this question without reading any other answer.. let's see if your reason for the discrepancy is the same as the others... or merely pre-&^&-text.

The steroid issue: So some white *&* says Bonds is on steroids and therefore he must be? Really? What if some white guy says Bush is a heartthrob.. I guess it must be true then.. Bonds never failed a steroid test - if you believe otherwise you are RACIST.

Chuck... your point is worthy of discussion.... closest "correct" answer yet... But has Bonds been "discovered" to be "something"?

It was a different market environment at that point, and the Mark McGuire ball has lost most of its value since then.

The Bond's ball is not equally valued because it probably will not be the record setting ball. He will probably hit many more home runs in his career.. the final ball will be the most valuable.

Steroids is a minor issue in this. Race is a non-issue.

I think that the major reason right now that Barry's ball isn't worth what McGuire's is because Barry, despite his enormous talent, his heroic record, etc...has proven time and again that he is an @**hole. I also think that a lifetime record is different than a season record, and there was not nearly the hype surrounding Bonds feat as there was around the race with McGuire and Sosa. Yes, people were talking about it, but it was kinda like watching a train - you know it's coming, it's not going to stop... The Sosa McGuire thing was really a race.

Thumbs up to Bonds, though. He didn't ask for the ball back for what seemed like old fashioned reasons.

Mark had not blown off congress yet and the baseball world was excited after the strike. Baseball was back. If Sosa had broken the record first, it would have been the same. People just do not like Bonds. The celebration would not have been much even if steroids were not present. He was booed at all other parks except his own long before the steroid issue. Of course the race card will be played by some. It always is.

I'm not really sure that racism is in play when you believe a guy is juicing due to the fact that between breaking into the major leagues and age 35, Bond's head grew one full hat size, and his feet grew a full inch. That's not racism, that's facts that don't add up.
Possibly his home run ball isn't worth as much because people consider him to be a turd. That also, is not racism, it's an opinion.
BTW, affirmative action has nothing to do with the value of a baseball.

Not everything is racism. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar....

It sounds to me like you're the racist here. I don't know if Barry Bonds or Mark McGuire took steroids, but if they did, they'll have to live with the knowledge that they cheated to get where they are. Don't be lumping all white people together, thinking we're all racists. This issue of steroids has nothing to do with race. If you're black or white and you take steroids to enhance your performance, then you're a cheater, nothing more, nothing less.

Answer what question?

I do believe in affirmative action, but I'm still unimpressed by Bonds, mainly because of the high probability that he's on steroids, and to a lesser extent because I see athletic ability as entertainment, not leadership. More power to the athletes who succeed fairly... but it's not the same as leading a country into or out of war.

They haven't sold the ball yet. It may fetch a higher price. I'm not that excited about Barry Bond because of the cloud of steroids he's been under for years.

Get real! McGuire's baseball went for so much before he was discovered to be a juicer. This is why the life size bronze statue of him remains in a warehouse and not displayed. Maybe this is racism?

Yes, the discrepancy is obvious - steroids.

Besides, your facts are way off. Bond's ball value should be compared to the last ball to break the home run record, by Hank Aaron. That ball sold for $650,000. Did you happen to know that Hank Aaron is black too?

When McGuire broke Ruths record no one knew how he got tobe so strong. All the World knows Bonds was juiced to the gills all the time he hit all those homers. Affirmative action my rear end.
