If you had a short circuit your breaker/fuse should trip/blow. IF this has already occured then unplug all appliances connected to the affected circuit and reset the breaker,if it will not reset you will need to call an electrician, if it does reset you will either need to rethink the amount of equipment you run at one time or check the equipment for faults as faulty incorrectly fused appliances could cause your breaker to trip.

You would have either a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker at the main panel box. They go after a curcuit in your home has 15 or 20 plus Amps running through it. Is your room circuit dead? When you reset the breaker, does it trip back to OFF right away? That would be a short. If, not you may have just overloaded it.

If you have a full short circuit, the breaker concerned should trip, disconnecting power.

You are right to be carefull when you have so many cords lying around. Inspect them every once in a while for damage or fraying as this can lead to a high resistance short that can cause a fire before the breaker trips.

(If your house is modern, (Post 1970 or so), your air conditioner is probably on its own separate circuit.)
