The only thing that makes sense to me is that the soon to be mother is showered in gifts to help with her baby.

The party isn't for the mother, it's for the baby. And yes, you are showering the baby with presents.

Its called a baby shower because the mother receives a lot of gifts for her baby so thats why its called a baby shower.

IT IS A BABY SHOWER, not a mother party. It is celebrate the new life she is growing inside her. The baby is getting Showered with gifts. My Friends actually did me a Different shower. It was my 3rd child they wanted the party cater to me. After 3 kids I already had everything. My husband worked for Kimberly Clark so wipes I didn't need because we had cases of. So I was flattered to get the Mommie Shower. I got Bath Products and spa stuff, YA KNOW CALGON type products, Pedicure. Which was nice cause I couldn't reach my feet. You wanna get the MOMMIE SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL. GET HER MONKEY SHAVED, or her TOES DONE. 2 things I wanted done often During my pregnancy. I couldn't reach mine. That would be a Great business to open up. A place for pregnant women to go get the CHA CHA Shaved. Hate a hairy cha cha. Sorry I guess I kinda Changed the Subject.

Thats why its called a shower. Just like a wedding shower is for showering the couple in gifts for their new life together.

That's correct...a baby or wedding shower is referred as a "shower" because the woman is to be showered with gifts :)

so people can shower the unborn baby with gifts that she or he will use when she or he gets here. and it does help the mother it saves her time and money.
