You have been given some misinformation. Opossums, as they are correctly called (Possums do not live on our continent, although that's what we all call them here) ARE native to the eastern United States. Your opossum's ancestors were here long before any of our ancestors landed on boats from other countries. They are also not dangerous to children or pets. The only other animals he would be a threat to would be chickens, outside pet birds, or insects. If you do not have chickens or an outdoor aviary, you do not need to be concerned. Actually, I have chickens AND an aviary as well as wild opossums, but they have never bothered any of my birds. As long as there are other food sources, I don't think they would even bother those. The worst you will have to worry about is that if you have outdoor dogs or cats, he will eat their food. A friend of mine had one that would come through his pet door, eat with his cats, then lie down and nap with them in the house. They also do not tear up or dig up plants. I keep flower beds and a small garden, and they have never harmed my plants in any way. If you absolutely feel you must get rid of him (for which there is no real reason), you can either trap and relocate him or just remove all his food sources-pet food dishes outside, a tight lid on the trash can, no food scraps left out. With no food, he will not be as likely to come near the house.

Possums are nasty. We trap them and bury them. They stink and besides that they don't belong here. They compete with native animals for food and habitat. Best thing to do is get rid of them. A shovel would work. Wack them in the head and dig the hole all with the same tool. It is a shame when people introduce non native species into an area.

You can trap it and move it, but that's no guarantee it won't come back and there are probably others in the area. If you don't have pets or small children, I wouldn't worry about it. You might call animal control in your area. They may have trap(s) that you can borrow for the purpose of moving. They may even relocate it for you after you trap it.

If you are asking about a POSSUM, the best thing to do without killing the animal is to catch it, either by hand (with good leather gloves, of course) or in a live trap and take it someplace outside of town (like in the woods) and turn it loose.

Make sure you don't have anything it likes to eat. Keep your garbage lids secure and your pet food indoors. It probably was just passing through. They are spooky but kinda neat too. I haven't seen one in years. =-)

You'll have to set a trap, they'll dig numerous holes in your lawn and kill your plants and bushes. Try a home improvement or garden supply store.

If its out in daylight it is sick and you need to destroy it. Otherwise get a dog to chase it away

Leave it alone and let it go about it's business. It could have babies around. POSSUMS are not rats - they are harmless.
