2x + y = 5
y = 5 - 2x
Simply move the 2x to the other side of the eqation and change its sign from - to +. That leaves y all by itself and you have solved the problem in one simple step!!

If you know what x is, you can solve it all the way through. So if x was 5, you would have:
y= -2 (5) + 5
y= -10 + 5
y= -5
But if you don't know what x is, that's the furthest you can solve it.
