We are removing our 20 year old cedar shake roof. Can we burn the shingles without harming the environment. I don't know what fire inhibitor (if any) these were treated with when the roof was built.

Thanks for the answers. I'm actually going to put an add on Craigslist for free wood for fire pits and camping. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't spreading noxious fumes around the town...

Yes you can burn them and they should burn readily. However, I recommend that you burn them outside on a fairly calm (no wind) day as the cedar is not harmful but depending on the area you live in (near a city, mill, etc.) there could be any number of things that have settled on and became part of the shingles over the years. The effect on the environment would be negligible and as far as I know (as a former roofer) cedar shingles are not treated with anything as they are naturally rot resistant, hence their use as roof covering.

Don't burn them in a fireplace, the cedar will leave way too much residue inside the flue. Outside yes, providing there is no waterproofer or paint on them. To check for water proofer, drip some water on the upper side and see if it soaks in right away, if it doesn't toss 'em, if it soaks in quickly you're fine.
