Let one of the numbers be x
therefore the other number is 8-x
so we get
x - (8-x) = 12
x-8 + x = 12
2x = 12+8
2x = 20
x = 20/2
x = 10

Your two equations are
a+b=8
a-b=12

Then you solve: a+= 8-b
substitute a in the second equation: 8-b-b=12, 8-2b=12, -2b=4
b=-2
substitute b in the first equation : a+(-2)=8, a=10

x + y = 8
x - y = 12
There are several ways to solve this
One easy one is to add the equations
So,
2x = 20
and, x = 10
Now substitute
10 + y = 8
Solve for y by subtracting 10 from both sides
y = - 2
