If the sores are open and weeping or oozing, you need a prescription for it.
Until you get him to the doctor, don't put either of those things on it. Use plain warm water and a mild soap like Dove on it. Don't scrub. Use some Balmex or Desitin or Triple Paste if you can get it. If you can let him go without a diaper, please do. The air is good for it.

I'm not sure why you think it's impetigo. Impetigo is very contagious and should be treated with prescription anitbiotics. I wouldn't put cornstarch on it. I would keep it dry and clean i.e., change her as often as possible. Impetigo tends to spread, I think and I also think it itches but, I could be wrong on that. I'd look up impetigo on the internet. I've never heard of impetigo as a diaper rash though. I assume it's possible but, I don't know what makes you think it's impetigo. Do you know about yeast infection rashes in babies? Is that perhaps what you're thinking of? That also needs to be treated with specific prescription ointment from the doctor. That kind of rash usually doesn't bother the baby -- doesn't hurt, and looks kind of patchy and red and bumpy. That should be kept dry but, not with cornstarch. It will take a few days to go away after it is treated but, it should be treated for longer than just when the symptoms are gone. Hope this is helpful.

Ouch. Please don't use either of those things. Get your baby to the pediatrician for an absolute diagnosis, and in the meantime just wash the area gently and keep his diaper changed often and his hands off the area. Your doctor may give you a topical or oral antibiotic.
If it it impetigo, it's probably scabby, right? If it's just red and irritated, it may just be diaper rash. A great remedy for diaper rash is zinc (check the diaper rash cream that you purchase to be sure it contains zinc). Use it at every diaper change, and change your baby frequently. Again, though, if you aren't certain, just use warm water and get your baby to the pediatrician immediately. Impetigo is highly contagious, so this could turn into a household epidemic pretty quickly.

don't use cornstarch! it can trap moisture inside the wounds and cause the rash to be worse. until you can get your baby to the doc for a prescription, give him/her a warm bath with baking soda three times a day. this worked for us. also, use petroleum jelly on his/her bottom to relieve pain. it won't irritate, it's effective and it costs close to nothing. good luck!
