I was wondering what would be a good tank mate/s for them?
Im fairly new to fishkeeping myself so something on the easier side that is hardy and obviously a community fish. Im in a hard water area (not sure of the pH though) and have a 4 foot tank

Ok so do you have a coldwater tank or tropical?

For a coldwater tank i'd suggest White Cloud Minnows.. they are extremely hardy fish but they are rly small as well and they love to live in shoals of around 5 so you could make the population of your tank increase by adding 10.. they are really cool and quite cute too = )

For a tropical tank i'd go to some Tetra's they are just like the white cloud minnows but a tropical water version.. they are small and come in different colours so again you could put a shoal of 10 in and they will add colour to your tank without over running it. Again they are hardy fish and get along with everything!

Good luck with finding the right fish = )

Gold fish look small right now, but they grow to 12"+ long and the live 10+ year. Unless you plan to put them in a 55+ gallon tank when they grow big, otherwise, you should return those fish, they are not mean for a small tank. As the cloudy water, How big is your tank? Is your tank cycle? How much do you feed each time? How long do you have your tank setup? Is those gold fish the only fish in the tank? How long do you keep your light on each day? A quick fix will be do a 50% water change, but you still need to find out the root cause of your cloudy water. If you provide more info about your tank, I may able to give you some more suggestion. Good luck.

Really, there is no good mate because gold fish are so dirty. As a rule of thumb, goldfish shouldn't be housed with any other fish besides other goldfish. Because they're so dirty, it throws off the water quality which isn't good for tropical fish. If I were you I'd stick with goldfish and maybe start out another tank with a heater for tropical fish. :-)

Goldfish are members of the Carp family and can withstand conditions other breeds would not. As to the plecostamus, They are algae eaters and are also very hardy. If you are worried about the PH factor a test kit can be bought for less than $ 10. A 4' tank ? High,Low,gal. capacity ? These are issues you have failed to mention. If in doubt purchase more Carp. Also would suggest buying a book or two on aquarium care and how to properly take care of your new "charges" !!

Guppies are tropical so they need to live in warm water. Goldfish are cold water fish. Your pleco may grow real real big (too big for a 4' tank). Maybe try barbs, minnow, tetras or danios which can tolerate non-heated tanks.

White Cloud Mountain Minnows are a good choice. They are active, colorful and require the same water conditions as your goldfish.

I was told that goldfish are so dirty that other fish, with the exception of bottom feeders, can't share a tank with them.

The lord has always been a fan of Parana and Tiger Sharks. Either of these should make your goldfish an excellent tank mate.
