Cayenne pepper tea tastes awful but works great. 1-2 level spoon fulls of cayenne pepper in a cup of hot water with lot's of honey. Sip over the course of 30-60 mins. You'll have to do it at least 2-3 times a day. (It gets better/easier after the 2nd cup)
A more soothing remedy is a ginger bath. Run a bath about as hot as you can comfortably stand, put 2-4 spoon fulls of crushed ginger in the water, and soak for 30 mins. When you get out you'll probably continue to sweat, so stay in a towel or robe for a while. It's really relaxing and you can sweat out a cold.
Ibuprofen might also help, but it's hard on your stomach.
Good luck!

There are hundreds of different cold viruses. What's worse, many of them routinely alter themselves, posing new threats at every turn. With no cure in sight, the same remedies administered by our forebears remain our first line of defense: chicken soup, hot lemonade, tea with honey. None of these will cure a cold, but anything that eases the agony even temporarily is just what the doctor ordered.

When you think your starting to get a cold, start taking extra vitamin c. Double the dose of what is normally taken. You can get the diarrhea from too much though.
