My son loves canned green beans, peas, etc. I didn't see any preservatives ~ just green beans, salt, and water. But still, it isn't exactly fresh frozen food.

P.S. Canned foods isn't the only thing I feed him. Just as a "side-item" for lunch and dinner.

Canned food really isn't good for anyone.

The canning process heats the food to such a high temperature that it kills most of the nutrients in the food. Also, the sodium content is typically very high.

Try and make veggies a priority. Don't spend as much time on the meat portion and put that effort into the veggies. Fresh grean beans can't be beat!

Some quick recipes I use all the time:

Green beans:
Snap the ends off and put the beans through the slicing blade of a food processor. Steam them until tender. In the meantime, put a few tbls of butter in a frying pan and saute some sliced almonds until golden. Combine , add salt and pepper (and a little more butter, if needed) and Viola!

Broccolli:
Chop up a few cloves of garlic and saute in some olive oil with florets, 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes and 1/4 tsp salt. Cook for 2 min. Add 1/4-1/2 C of water or stock and cover. Steam until tender. (a little spicy! My son doesn't mind though :)

Red potatoes:
Quarter potatoes. Line a baking dish with some olive oil. Combine with some salt, pepper and rosemary (or whatever seasoning you like) toss to coat and bake on 375 until tender, or golden (dep on how you like them!)

Basically, canned food won't hurt him, but it's not terribly good for him. Teaching him to like fresh foods will serve him better in the long run.

Get a crockpot and throw your meat in there and then focus on the veggies.

Not a problem. Most families in the US were raised on canned foods. It's what they could afford and there is nothing wrong with it. There are purists, of course, who consider anything from a can to be the equivalent of devil worship, but I'm certainly not in that category. I agree that total salt is something to watch, but just the amount in a canned product is nothing to be alarmed about.

Sure! It's probably tastier than baby food, and if he can chew it okay, then it's fine. Just because it's canned doesn't make it "bad" food. And it's good for him to develop those chewing skills. I knew a lady who was still feeding her 2-yr-old baby food!

My rule with my kids...if they have enough teeth to chew it, it's okay. My youngest was eating chopped up hotdogs, hamburgers, potatoes, fruits (canned and fresh), vegetables, (canned and fresh), etc...by that time. He had 8 teeth by then and never wanted to eat the baby food. He started losing weight cause he wasn't eating the baby food, so I asked his doctor, and he told me that as long as he can chew it up (regular food), it was okay.

You could get him low sodium canned veggies. That way you have the convenience of the can and less sodium for his little body to process.

I suppose it is... I mean baby foods are also canned/bottled. I am not a fan of processed foods but I don't think he would get sick or anything.

Why not? If he likes it, go for it. If you can get him to eat the fresh ones, even better, but some veggies are better than none!

Its not too bad - just don't over do it - children don't need salt at this age.
