It can - in many cases a surname identifies cultural roots about an individual's heritage. It allows one to be able to see where s/he has come from. I have been able to use my grandparents' surnames to recreate the story of how my family came to the United States. This story has helped me to understand the sacrifices that my family has made to help me become who I am. The forces of cultural and ethnic identity drew my family to certain parts of the country, places where they put down roots and raised me, thus influencing my culture. Surname is an identifier.

My last name is difficult to spell and pronounce.

My barometer for whether someone is intelligent or not is if they see it in print and can write it down correctly on another document. If they can't, I figure they're either dyslexic, lazy, or just not the sharpest crayon in the box.

It also helps identify whether someone calling me at home is someone I know or not. If they can't pronounce it correctly and completely mangle it, I know that I don't know the person calling.

Yes.

My last name perfectly balances my first name.

Since balance is important to me, my name gives me a sense of completeness or OK-ness.
