my 3 year old niece tipped his tank over and the fish fell out, we took 5 minutes to put him in the tank with clean water. right now he moves but stays still for about 5 minutes at a time. does that mean hes dying? or is regaining his oxygen> he was lying flat now hes lying with body in air and head in rocks. is he okay??

well most of the time fish usually float when they are dead but maybe it is dead and it is still in shock so it keeps moving every once and a while?

A betta can live up to 7 years, and can be out of water for around 15 minutes. I would put some stress coat in the water, when you touch him, all his beneficial slime goes away and he's way more susceptible to illness. Also a pinch of aquarium salt would be helpful, it helps to destress them a little bit. He's also probably pretty shocked. I would monitor his habits, make sure he's still eating correctly and swimming and such.

Fish will sometimes go into shock after being out of the water for a while. He might be fine, but keep an eye on him. I came back from work one day, and found my green terror on the floor behind my tank. He jumped out while I was away, and must have been on the floor for hours. After "fish cpr" about 2 hours, he was fine. Fish are more resilient than you think.

Beta fish especially will play dead for a while. Don't rush to flush.

Betta fish can live out of water as long as they are moist. The breath atmospheric air and so they can actually live out of water if they need to. He will be fine once he gets over the shock of it. However, in the future I would not leave him out so long if you can help it.

He's regaining his energy
I would put a tablespoon of aquarium salt on 5 gallon for him to regain his strength and fight against diseases

Hope that helps
Good luck

sounds to me like he is dead. I have had 3 beta fish and the only time they had there heads in rocks was when they died.

A betta only lives about 2 years.

Yea, I'm pretty sure he's dying...why would you wait for five minutes to put it in a cup of water?!?!! Even the toilet would've been better! They need the oxygen in the water to breathe!

Bettas breathe air so if he was still wet when you got to him he is ok.

he is just in shock. i would watch over him and change the water more frequently. this would give him more oxygen. Hope your fishie survives!
