Why would you abandon a musical act because of one thing that was said about George W. Bush? Do you not believe in the 1st Amendment (that's the right to free speech)? Or does that only apply when an artist says something to kiss the government's a**... kinda like what Toby Keith did.

starbrite - The difference between Vedder and the Chicks is that Pearl Jam have always been a left leaning politically vocal rock band. What Vedder did was not unexpected. I do believe some fans left that showin protest though. The Chicks are (were) a country icon, and country music has a conservative fan base.

So Hannibal - basically you want to see artists that will do a song and dance like a monkey for you. It's their show, they should have the right to say whatever they want.

I still listen to their music, but I don't agree with their politics or the way they presented themselves. One of my pet peeves is celebrities who think we care about their political views. I don't really enjoy Keith's political music that much either, but it was kinda cowardly for the Chicks to trash our president overseas. I believe in freedom of speech, but you have to concede that was pretty dumb move on their part. Country music fans are notoriously conservative, and I don't think they should have been surprised by the reaction.
On the other hand, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam IMPALED a mask of President Bush onstage at a concert not long after the Dixie Chicks incident. How much did we hear about that? Hardly anything. I think it just goes back to the point that country fans are majority conservative and there was much more outrage because they were so out of the norm with their political views. I love some of their music and would still buy their music, but if they really feel the need to express their views, they could've done it in a more respectful way.

I still like the Dixie Chicks and thought that their last album is a great album. I also happen to be a Toby Keith Fan. I agree it is freedom of speech and Natalie has apologized for it time and time again. I did not abandon them or change the station whenever they come on the radio. ( on stations other than country b/c country radio abandoned them). People are passionate about hating them. I've learned not to argue about the issue b/c my husband is one of the Dixie Haters.

I have no issue with the 1st Amendment, none whatsoever, however, I happen to disagree with with some statements they made and I don't particularly care for most of their music, thats why I am not a Dixie Chicks fan. Just because i listen to Country music does not mean I am bound by some mysterious bond to be a fan of every group or singer and every song. Honestly, I never did much like the Dixie Chicks even before the big upset.
You have a point you are arguing, but there is no one arguing against you, no one is saying that they cannot say what they did, we are simply saying that we have just as much a right to chose to not like them and not listen to them because we disagree with their views.

I don't like the Dixie Chicks because their music sucks.
On top of that, they did a song about Earl, you know the one I mean. Then they have the NERVE to criticize Toby's song.
Plus, what makes them think that I give a F@#K what they think. They're there to entertain, not to tell us their political views.

First off I loved their first songs out...but then they started sing crap i didnt like then they made a off hand remark and only made themselves look stupid in the process....so i dont hate them for what they said...their music started sucking before that and i just wish that famous people would maybe think a bit before they start spouting off crap....oh an toby's son did not kiss the governments assss he just said what he was thinking and its what 1/2 the country was feeling....but he also sang that song before the dixie chicks spouted off! They also let their fame go to their head and were never really truely country....like i said i liked their first stuff, but then crap like landslide came out and that sucked...i dont care that they are not the original singers....it sucked....

It's not what Natalie said about George Bush. She took the opportunity to exercise the right to the first amendment even though it was against the country where most of their fans are. They also have the freedom to exercise their right to leave the country if they don't like it here.

I used to like them, then Natalie opened her pie hole, I agree you can disagree with the president but taking cheap shots at him in a public venue, just shut up and sing, and after the controversy they basically said screw you to the country fans that have supported them, God bless Toby, he supports the troops big time, he is also a democrat but still respects the president.
