There are a lot of future hall of famers still playing the game, but I don't think it would be fair to lump pitchers and position players together, so here's my breakdown for current, active "bests";

Pitching;
Starter; Roger Clemens - 352 wins and counting. #8 on all-time win list. #2 on all-time K's list (4,653 K's). #14 on all-time innings-pitched list (4,889.2 innings)

Closer; Trevor Hoffman - 511 saves and counting. #1 on all-time saves list. Only been on the DL once in his entire career. Only MLB player to EVER record 500 saves. And to do all of this on a team that has never won a World Series in it's franchise history (Padres)...

Position Player;
Alex Rodriguez - 2191 hits, 500 HR's (youngest player to ever reach 500HR mark), 1456 RBIs, 254 stolen bases, .305 career average...and counting (only 13 MLB seasons...7-8+ seasons left in his career, if healthy).

a close second...
Ken Griffey Jr. - 2513 hits, 589 HR's, 1678 RBIs, 184 stolen bases, .290 career average...and counting (18 MLB seasons..maybe 2-3 years left in his career).

Ken Griffey Jr. If he hadn't had injuries he'd be right up there with Bonds as we speak. Sweetest swing in baseball, its beautiful to watch. Although I think Alex Rodriguez will surpass him and become probably the greatest player to ever play the game, Ken Griffey is my pick because of his ability to display the 5 tools of baseball: Arm Strength (Did you see him throw out A-Rod in the all star game?), Running Speed: Used to be a 20+ Caliber base stealer, Power Hitting:Was on pace to shatter the record before injuries plagued him, Contact Hitting: hit for 300+ in 7 of first 8 seasons, Fielding Ability: Gold Glover From 1990-1999. Also, he's only 38, and most players are playing into their early 40s, and seeing as hes on pace to hit 40+ homers this year, don't be surprised if he surpasses 700 by the end of his career.

If u are talking about best player without steroids or any possible suspect based on beginning of career and suddently huge.

hands down ICHIRO - consistentcy like there's no other, among the best batting average, year after year.

oviously not Barry Bond
not Alex Rodriguez - bulk up last few year hmmm...
not Jeter - compare numbers to Ichiro, no way

Who cares! Everyone took steroids!

Your retarded self can go commit suicide because Barry Bonds set a new HR record and the false hatred you bandwagon troublemakers did not do anything to dampen a new day in baseball history!

You can also loosen up your hockey helmet while you wait for your short yellow school bus, but don't drool too hard! HA, HA!!!!! The joke is on all of the Barry haters!!!!!

Do you mean ANY type of steroids?

Do you know how many athletes are prescribed steroids LEGALLY?

Do you have any idea how many medicines contain some form of steroid?

Technically... a LOT more players have taken steroids in some form or another than you think.

the best player i think carrerwise and is still playing would be griffey Jr, as he is percieved to have not taken steroids, but we really dont know who is on or not on steroids. and i beleive if not for the 3-4 yrs of injury we would be watching a race to 755

Any player that steps onto the field WITHOUT drugs, is automatically tied for first place!

Out of that group, the decision is so hard to compute that it would take a supercomputer and every item of baseball infromation.

It is hard to meet up with MIckey Mantle or Willie Mays' passion, desire and statistics nowadays.
