I have one five gallon tank that used to hold 2, yes 2 goldfish, they went to go live at my aunts. After scrubbing and scrubbing everything we are plenty sure that every trace of goldfish is gone from filter, tank, and plants/decorations.
I would like to have a betta along with some guppies, but me being jr. fish person, have no idea as too how many guppies to put with my betta, along with what type.
Also I need to know what bettas eat because, at our pet store all of the employees are greenhorns and know ablsolutly nothing.

If I end up with a "guppy" problem, my aunt has a LOT of tanks, that's where my goldfish went to live, they've got a 20 gallon to themselves

You will need a small (25 watt heater) for other fish. Try 1 male Betta with 3 Harlequin Raspboras, or 3 Neon Tetras, or 1 male Dwarf Gourami with the tetras and raspboras, or a school of 4-5 Zebra Danios. All these fish could live with a small Corydoras catfish on the bottom. Don't get a pleco- they grow too large. Scrape the algae yourself and make sure you do regular H20 changes 2 x every month to keep the water clean. Feed lightly 2 x day. Good luck!

Unfortunately bettas and guppies don't mix. They will nip each other's fins and you'll end up with dead fish. A 5 gallon would be good for a betta plus 1 otto or a betta plus one african dwarf frog. Or, if you leave the betta out you could get 3 male guppies (don't get females, they're already pregnant and you won't have room for the babies). The general rule is 1inch of fish per gallon but there are other things to consider when setting up a tank. A filter for a 5 gallon tank is not good enough for more than just a couple small fish.

First, the one inch per gallon "rule" is total and complete junk and simply doesn't work at all. It's spread by people that don't know any better.
Bettas and guppies can sometimes be kept together, but sometimes it can cause problems. I would suggest you try it to see if your betta will cause a problem or not. Assuming you don't get any tail nipping going on, you could comfortably keep 5-6 male guppies with a male betta in your tank.

I can tell you what i have in mine
1 male betta
1 cory cat, the one that only gets 2 inch big
3 zebra danios
you can't put male guppies in there because the betta will bite them
As for the females you could up to 5 max, but be carful, because usually they are already pregnant when you buy them
As for the food, betta's like these pellets, and also frozen brine shrimp and frozen bloodworms
But don't over feed him
Hope that helps
Good luck

There's no need to experiment with this, it's a sure shot the betta will attack the fancy guppies because he will perceive them as a threat due to their rich coloration and long fins.
In a 5.5 gallon tank I would put just a betta, you will have one happy fish in all that space!

The fancy guppies are often attack by male bettas so be sure to get plain ones. The general rule is one inch of fish per gallon. Bettas can eat pellet foods made for them. They should not eat flakes though. My bettas do best on a diet of frozen food. They love:
brine shrimp
plankton
daphnia
blood worms
