You teach people how to treat you, Dr. Phil says. You can't control her behavior, but you sure as heck can control how you respond to her behavior. Don't affirm or enable her in any way. If she is behaving like a child, ignore her. If she wants something from you, deny it. Protect yourself and teach her that you have high standards and if she wants to deal with you she will respect them. Understand, of course, that she'll probably think you're the crazy one and may not want to deal with you. No loss, apparantly.

I would jerk her back into reality.

This happened to me. We were leaving a store. Another friend was driving. This woman began having a tantrum and banging on the seat.

I turned around & yelled at her: "HEY! You aren't going to act like a psycho around me. You either knock it off, or we'll drop you off at the police station on our way home."
woman: "see? That just shows me how much you don't like me."
me: I don't like the way you're acting. If you're trying to scare me, it's working. I think you're nuts, and are unable to control yourself. If you can't control yourself, we'll get the police to control you."

We dropped her off at the police station because she kept ranting the whole way. She never behaved that way again. Not in our presence anyway.

This older woman friend of yours is trying to manipulate & control you. Be tough; stand your ground. Fight back with as much, or more, force as is necessary to make it as unrewarding to her as possible to engage in this type of behavior again.

There's no motivation to repeat a behavior that ends up having harsh consequences.

almost nothing.

If you think she is experiencing effects of a mental or physical illness, you could suggest seeing a doctor.

You can ask her if she has been under unusual stress lately. maybe she will talk about it.
