I'm not sure... you'd have to ask the British farmers that question.

Well i am not British and i am not a farmer but its obvious really. All the cattle in the affected area would have to be slaughtered for fear of passing the disease. I do not agree with their method of dealing with the cattle but they had to get rid of them all. The media is treating this as an epidemic because simply saying " the foot and mouth disease has been located at a small farm is not a huge headline". The media love big headlines such as " Hundreds of cows slaughtered as epidemic continues".

I must be missing the point because I can't understand how you can possibly say that. Foot and Mouth is disastrous, its got to be reported and I can't in any way see that it has been blown up out of all proportion. Hopefully, with the media reporting people who are not involved in the farming industry know all about it so, for instance, anyone going on a rambling holiday will know NOT to go on footpaths in the areas affected. There is such a thing as GOOD journalism you know.

Most people remember scenes from a few short years ago - 2001, when over seven million animals were slaughtered in Britain.
Here in Ireland, we had one recorded case at that time, because of the precautions put in place. I remember having to wash the wheels of my car entering and leaving farms, wearing plastic disposable shoes, having to disinfect myself and anything I was carrying twenty times a day, and the farmers were buckling under the strain. It was worth it, and we avoided disaster, but the thought of a recurrence strikes dread and fear in the heart of every farmer now, I would think.
I don't think it's overblown in the media, it's life-changing stuff for anyone involved, and ruinous for anyone affected.
I think lots of people are following this story VERY closely.

Maybe you should be put down you quite clearly have foot in mouth.
This disease is amazingly virulent and if not brought quickly under control will be a disaster, not only for farmers but also for consumers who will see prices rise dramatically and result in thousands of animals slaughtered.
And did you believe that if the media had failed to report it the rest of the World would have remained ignorant about it?

very sturdy question. yet with reference on your first answer, i might upload, why won't be in a position to the government do greater to stay away from foot and mouth interior the 1st place? sounds like this modern-day outbreak got here from a lab experimenting with this virus, i think it is going to have been greater safeguard. British farmers look to get a uncooked deal various the time, and it relatively is the final element they want on the schedule. funds might desire to bypass to creating those labs safeguard and risk-free for the two the employees and the common public. i think beneficial the cost of this may be a strategies decrease than paying out repayment to farmers who unfastened out in those circumstances.

Well alot of farmers in Alberta Canada would be in sympathy as our beef industry was virtually shut down because of one cow that never was in the food chain was found to have mad cows disease. The farmers are just now getting back on their feet.

Until the original source is found and all known cases are discovered annnnnnd some assurance is given that no more will emerge, how can this be termed "overblown"?

US went through this and found the source to be cattle imported from Canada.
