I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "replace every couple of years". Yes, laptops are not as upgradeable as desktops, but most people don't bother upgrading their desktops, either. I would not buy a laptop for things like games or video-editing, anyway.
That being said, if the laptop is from a high-quality manufacturer, it should last for years. I have an old laptop from 1999 that was originally a "desktop replacement" computer, and it still works fine, though the hinges are beginning to wear out. It currently has Kubuntu on it.
I personally recommend Toshiba laptops. But that is just MY preference.

Not really, no, I don't believe laptop harddrives last as long as normal ones, and laptops have a tendency to overheat, desktop replacesments especialy since they are so powerful. For use at school, i would not get a desktop replacement, get a cheaper laptop, HP or Dell make pretty good ones for your price, I'd say under 1000, plus it will have a longer lasting battery, run cooler, and be easier to transport then a desktop replacement. Even the best computers need to be replaced, so why spend so much on one?

In my opinion, for college a laptop is going to be the easier option because it is small and easily transportable.
The problem is that Laptops don't generally last as long as a desktop PC, are harder to upgrade and are very expensive to fix, spill a drink on your desktop keyboard, get another one for like £5, do that to a laptop keyboard and it has a large chance to fry the whole computer. Also to use a laptop for any length of time much over 4 hours you will have to plug it in and using the laptop for hours while it is plugged in will shorten its lifespan.
So you have to decide if you want to choose ease of transport or long term durability for your college computer. In short, the PC is far more cost-effective and far easier to clean/upgrade/fix but is heavy the laptop is mobile and light. your call ;p

keep in mind... 2k would buy you one serious tower.
Yes desktop replacement notebooks can get fairly high end now days. Your obvious first check will be dell, try looking into some acer (my personal fav) and asus. The prices of the acer will be less but their smaller comparable and well the support, like all preman pc companies, leaves something to be desired. If you dont foresee yourself needing to buy another notebook in a couple years, i would splurge on better memory (more AND faster) better cpu and graphics. Perhaps a docking station is best suited for you.

Hi,
I am a student and i just bought a Toshiba Tecra M7 Tablet PC (high spec) laptop all under $2000.
Except for the fact that it is a laptop and light, i can use it as a Writing Paper so now i don't have to buy any writing pad or pen.
My Core specs are:
Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz @ T7200
2GB RAM
100 GB HDD
14.1" Widescreen
FingerPrint Scanner (for security)
Tablet Screen. (can write on the screen).
Cheers.

These days, it is easy to get a laptop with a big enough screen and enough hard drive to do all you want to do. You can get a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to make it more ergonomic for when you are working at your desk. And if you need mega storage space, you can always get an external hard drive for things you don't need to tote around with you.
I work at a place that does mega computing work and we all just have laptops.

first off all, decide which type of computer you want:
Mac, Dell, HP...
then, check out their websites for info on customizing what is in the desktop or laptop you would like, and that should tell you the price.
