I want to know if I should get a laptop or desktop for college. Should I get the best laptop or one that I need to replace in a couple years? What are some really good laptops for under $2000?

No it won't. My first 2 laptops were desktop replacements, with 17" screens and fast graphics. But they get outdated quickly, have near zero expandability aside from using the USB ports. Look at it this way, a $500 laptop will eventually have to be replaced and upgraded, and a $3000 laptop will eventually have to be replaced and upgraded. If you go with the former you are only out $500 vs $3000.

I would get a decent laptop and replace it in a few years. I currently have a Thinkpad T60, it is going to last me at least 2-3 years before I replace it.. Or you can buy a really cheap laptop, and buy a decent desktop (Shuttle) that can play games and do heavy graphics work and be expandable, and use your laptop for taking notes and homework.

Good laptops are the Macbook or Macbook Pro, Thinkpad series, or Acer Travelmate.

Getting the best technology is a bad idea. A $2000 laptop will become slow by the day's standards after 3 years, a $1000 laptop will become slow by that day's standards after 2 years. Since you're going to college, you can do the math.

And no, a desktop replacement laptop will not last as long as a desktop of the same price. However in college, you really should have a laptop, unless you don't plan on ever taking it to class.

Choice is yours according to lifestyle. The hardware doesn't really matter.
