I know I pitcher can't pitch themselves into a save position. But can the prior pitcher pitch them into a save situation? A team needs to be leading by no more than 4 runs (I think it's 4) in order for it to be a save situation.

For example let's say a team goes into the bottom of the 9th with a 6 run lead (non-save situation) the relief pitcher, who is not a closer, gives up 4 runs - the lead in now only 2. Can the team bring in the closer for the save at this point, or is the save possibility gone?

PS- I know the save doesn't necessarily have to do with a closer, I'm more interested in when it can and can't be considered a save.

In your scenario, the pitcher coming in is eligible for a save with a 2-run lead regardless of how many men are out, because the tying run is in on the on-deck circle.

For a save, you need to either need to pitch three effectiveness innings to finish the game regardless of the score, pitch one inning with a 3-run or less lead, or get at least one out at the end of the game where the tying run is on-base, at bat, or in the on-deck circle.

The scenarios are all covered under rule 10.19

Any pitcher that finishes a game and pitches at least full inning with at most a 3 run lead, gets a save. A save can also be given any time a pitcher finishes a game that has the tying run on base or at bat. That is how you get a 4 run save. It doesn't matter how the final pitcher got to that point though. The pitcher before him can give up 30 runs, but as long as the conditions stated above are in place.

My favorite though is that a save can be awarded for anyone who pitches the final 3 innings and pitches "well". The "well" is determined by the scorekeeper.

If it is by 3 runs that they win, it is a save...if a reliever comes in with the bases juiced and a 5 run lead it can be considered a save because two runners on were in scoring position.

As long as the closer doesnt give up the four runs and they still have a 4 run lead or less, he can still get the save
