I have a 1997 Nissan Altima with 195,000 miles and the original clutch. Just recently, it has been doing some strange things. For example, if I am in third gear and speed up, the RPM's will go really, really high and then it will level out where it should be. When I am in first and just starting to move, I give it tons of gas and it doesn't take off like it used to. The RPM's go way up at strange times and I am smelling burnt rubber. I still have no problem shifting, the pedal is still easy to push and it doesn't slip out of gear. Any suggestions?

yes the clutch is bad you will have to get it changed clutch disk, pressure plate, and throw out bearing also you should have the flywheel resurfaced to make sure it is flat not warped or cracked from heat .if you don't it could take out the new clutch system out a short time then you would be right back with a bad clutch

That is a fair assessment. For having almost 200k miles, your clutch has done well.

Take it to a mechanic as soon as you can. You don't want it to get worse and break down while driving.
