How to root a butterfly bush from a big one.?

Have a butterfly bush, want to make more bushes. Do I just cut from anywhere on plant, put in water and wait to root.

Cuttings are easy. You can just stick them back in the soil. But you need to keep them moist, not wet.
Use a good potting mix (sterilize if you can find it) or some perlite or vermiculite (they are sterile due to how they are made). Put the cuttings in. Cover the stem & pot with plastic bottle to keep the humidity up around the lves.

There should only be very few, 2 or 3, on the stem. You need to have a node (where the lve grow out) stripped and in the soil. The roots will grow there. And another for the leaves, which you can cut in half.

Pay attention to make sure they do not dry out. And do not keep the root zone (where you want the roots ot grow, the soil) too wet.

I like to use a liquid kelp fertilizer. (follow bottle directions) It has enzymes and nutrients which help the roots grow.

To root a butterfly bush you dig a small trench next to the bush and lay a branch in the trench and put a stone or other weight on top. I'm not sure on what the time frame is for it to take root, but it should be rooted by next spring, or maybe by this fall

butterfly bushes are notorious for growing anywhere, so if your garden is anything like mine you will get new bushes anyway, somewhere! when you do then just transplant the new plants to where you want them.
