When the National League formed in 1876 many teams were only around for a few years. From 1878 - 1885 Providence was the home to the Providence Grays. They twice won the National League championship in 1879 and 1884. There are 8 teams from the league of that era that are still in existance:

Braves
Dodgers
Cubs
Reds
Giants
Phillies
Pirates
Cardinals

They have not had a major league team since the Providence Grays folded in 1885. They have a AAA minor league team, the Pawtucket Red Sox of the International League.
