The driving instructor will tell you when they think you are ready. I had 6 lessons with an instructor, and then practiced with my Dad for a few months before I went for mine. Good luck :)

As a Dad that has taught two sons how to drive, it is important to gain as much experience under as many different conditions as possible before driving on your own. Passing the test is easy. You can practice drive for a few hours concentrating on just the test maneuvers and pass. But simply passing a driving test does not make you a good driver.
I took my sons out on quiet streets, then on busy highways, then into heavy city traffic, then out at night, in the rain, in the snow, we practiced skids ice covered parking lots. I had them drive during long family trips, on toll roads.
You can never get too much experience behind the wheel; you can have too little.

As many as is needed to achieve a safe standard.
You can TAKE your test whenever you want, but if the examiner thinks you're a death trap then he'll abandon it there and then.
If you're asking how many it takes to PASS your test then the above reply stands. IMO anything less than 20 hours on the road is not enough.
If you're asking how many it takes to be able to drive, i'll tell you when i die, 'cos i can still find things to improve on and i passed my test in 1988 and was a DSA assessed motorcycle instructor for eight years.
Passing the test means you've achieved the MINIMUM standard allowed to be able to let you loose on your own - it does not mean you can drive!

Back in the good ol' days, people learnt to drive an awful lot quicker than they do now.
It took me 12 one-hour lessons to pass my test. Most people should be able to pass with less than 20 hours tuition.
The fact that they can't, is a good explanation of why driving standards in the U.K. are getting worse...
