FEMALE, definitely.
A midwife, preferably. She can just do the check-ups, too.
She does not have to just be for baby/pregnancy care.

It all depends on who you are more comfortable with.Personally,I like a female physician. She understands what its like to be in "the stirrups",and most are sympathetic to anxieties and fears. Both have gone through medical school, and theortetically have the same training. If your chosing your own Dr. for the first time, interview them, ask for 10 mins and if your uncomfortable, say thank you for their time and leave. Some Dr.s may or may not be open to the request - they are busy after all, but your health is important to you,and you have the right to switch if your not comfortable.

I had a female doctor and she was awesome! She made me feel very comfortable and talked to me to get my mind off of what she was doing down there. She would also warm the speculum up for me so it wasn't a cold shock. Female doctors will understand what you are feeling much better than male doctors would.

I prefer seeing a woman because, sorry, a guy will never be able to feel what I'm feeling.
I have found women to be more sympathetic too, patient, understanding.
That's not to say there aren't wonderful male Ob/Gyns out there - I have never found one that's right for me.

No, it doesn't make a difference except to you whether it's male or female. If they're good, then pick one that you're more comfortable with. Most women tend to pick female doctors because they can talk with them about any problems or topics on birth control, pregnancies, periods etc.

If it doesn't matter to you, then go with someone with a good reputation and is up on the lastest thing in their field.

I have had same male OB/GYN for nearly 20 years, he has delivered all of my children and I still see him for annual check-ups. Men doctors seem more compassionate when a woman explains her troubles, women doctors act like you can handle your problem and listen to you with half an ear (because she, too, is a woman?). Both trained for the same career, but the men seem, I don't know, to possibly WANT to understand where you are coming from (as opposed to a woman already knowing?), therefore give you whatever consideration he feels you deserve for your problem, and he typically works things out for you.

I haven't been to one yet but its what ever makes you comfortable.

If you think you will be alright with a male examining your vagina then go right ahead. The female has what you have so its really what makes you feel comfortable in the end.

some women prefer female gyn's and some prefer men. females know what it is like to have monthly issues. for me, i prefer males because the females seem to be rougher with their hands when doing the internal part of the exam.

It shouldn't make a difference. However, I always see a woman. I personally feel that they know what I'm going through; a man will never know exactly what we experience. That said, both should be professional and treat you with kindness. A "midwife" will not see you. A NURSE PRACTITIONER will, if you like.

I personally prefer a female... just because I feel she can better understand me.
