No you do not need anything.

If you are using a walking stick, that will have to go through the hand luggage scanner.

Airport security regularly deal with all types of surgical implants from pacemakers to bone pins

Your physician will be happy to provide you with documentation of the implantation. Depending on the type of prosthesis and the sensitivity of the scanners, the implant may alarm. However, even with documentation, you will probably be pulled aside for more intense scrutiny. I have not had a knee replacement, but I do wear a brace most of the time when travelling due to the walking distances required in most airports. I always get pulled aside for additional examination, even though many times the scanner does not alarm due to the composition of the brace.

The best advice is to be a little earlier and allow for an additional 10-15 minutes in the que at security.

My jewelry has set off metal detectors at airports. I just told them what it was and they let me through. One person did actually ask to see the jewelry, which was simple enough.

I think you can get a card from your doctor, but it probably won't ever be looked at. Just tell them you have a metal knee, they'll wand the area and feel it to make sure there are no weapons and it will be no problem. Carrying the card as an extra precaution is a good idea though.

i think knee replacements are a type of plastice not metal, so it won't be detected on the metal scanner.

Is there metal in the replacement knee?
If there is - no problem - my husband has two metal plates in his arm after a bicycle accident and the airport machines have never been bothered by them!

Ask the Doctor for a little card for the airport. The airports nearly ignore the card tho but it won't hurt to have it
