Ok, so my mom never lets me walk anywhere. We live in the "ghetto", and I used ro run the streets so I know what it's like. I was going to walk 1 mile for exersice, and she told me I couldn't because it's too "dangerous". Today I think I'm going to walk home from my job, which is a mile away. What are some ways to be more safe when your walking alone? Thanks
Note: She thinks it's bad here, when it isn't even that bad. I have seen the ghetto's in Washington, and it is way worse there. BTW- I'm 15 and I used to run the streets late at night and nothing ever happened

Downtown Denver can be scary - I hope you will be there in the middle of the day. Anyway, walk fast and with a sense of purpose and project confidence. Don't give anyone the impression you are lost or scared. Carry your cell phone - and always let someone know where you are going and when you should be back. You should also keep a whistle handy to call for immediate help. And don't hesitate to scream your head off if need be. If you are attacked FIGHT - aim for the groin and kick like you mean it. Use your fingers to claw at eyes if necessary. I would consider carrying pepper spray or a stun gun as well. But know how to use them and be prepared to use them if you must. *Oh yes, walk with a buddy whenever possible.

,I use to live in the city when I was a teen and I did get attacked once. I used my fists and the man ran. Though in hind sight i realize this could have been the worst thing to do but i panicked and just went for the kill. I think it was not the reaction he was anticipating but had he been a rapist that had done this a few time over of if he had a weapon to hand it may have been very different
for a while after this i carried a door key in my hand.
but it only made me more tense ,and i would hurt my thumb gripping the key. I made the mistake of walking down an alley at night in the rain. my advice is stay in well lit areas let people know where your going and use transport where possible

Your mother's right, kiddo...It is dangerous, damn dangerous..!!!....
Especially for a 15 year old girl.
Because nothing has pappened so far, doesnt mean nothing ever will happen to you. You could be mugged, raped, or plain killed for the hell of it.....My advice to your mom is to take you to these places if she can. You didn't mention where you lived, so I couldn't tell you about gun law restrictions in your area, but you're too young to buy or probably even use a firearm, anyhow.
If you do go out, take a weapon.....' DO NOT TAKE A KNIFE '.
If you don't know what you're doing with a knife, and don't have any folding or fixed bladed knife combat experience, they can be taken away, and used against you.
I would suggest a tazer, stun gun, or any current military rated form of tear gas. Wouldn't suggest Pepper mace.
That's about it, kiddo...But you're best bet is to not go out alone, day or night.

i even walk up one of the worst roads in the town, but its still not that bad. if you are that afraid to walk through the streets its nothing you can do tho. and im 16 btw

Just be vigilant. I have heard that it is best not to talk on the phone while walking. I used to talk while walking alone because I thought it would make me safer since I could tell whomever I was talking to what was going on. However, you are more vulnerable to attack when you are not paying attention.
Walk with your head up and be aware of your surroundings. If possible, carry pepper spray or mace, but check to make sure that they are legal for someone of your age in your area.
It is always best to walk with someone, of course.
Good luck and stay safe!

When walking alone in the city you should always stay in brightly lit areas(at night) and where there are many people around,(doing normal things, not suspicious-looking people), don't cut through allies and stay by main roads, and don't stop and talk to strangers...☺ Hope this helps!

Truth is, it's bad anywhere! You've got normal people addicted to drugs that have to support their habbit and don't mind robbing you. Also, people that intend harm on you, will do it during the day or night. It is suggested that you never walk alone, and maybe carry some sort of mace or body alarm. Most criminals don't like attention or mace.

Don't walk at night. Don't take short cuts through alleys. Walk with confidence, head held high and strong strides, be very aware of your surroundings, stick to main roads and stay around people. Carry a weapon of some sort (mace, pen knife...).

I always carry a whistle on my keychain, which I keep in an accessible pocket at all times. Most people who are up to no good don't like undue noise.
