At my work we end up replacing our U.S. flag about every 3-5 months because of regular wear and tear from the weather. We have about 8 used flags in their original boxes because I know you aren't supposed to dispose of them. So my question is what are you supposed to do with flags after you're done using them?

There is a proper method for disposal. The American Legion can dispose of it for you.

"American Legion Posts and local governments often have facilities to dispose of unserviceable flags."

While that statement is true, it's also true that they often have neither the facilities nor the knowledge. Furthermore, many municipalities have contacted USA Flag Site for what they should do with unserviceable flags. The only definitive answer is found in the US Flag Code. TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > Sec. 8(k). It states:

"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning"

Basically fold it up and burn it completely.

You can burn them or bury them. It's just supposed to be dignified and private.

There are places you can turn them over to. I know you can burn a damaged or worn flag also. ( It should be done in a respectful manner)

VFW is a proper answer unless you happen to have a military base nearby. They MIGHT be willing and/or able to better answer this post!!
