The same kinds of contributions made by Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Wiccans, Hindus, Mormons -- and every other religious group out there.

Someone's religion is not a defining characteristic of their value. Especially since the Constitution forbids religion from being used as such a measure.

As others pointed out, Atheists contribute the same things everyone else does. Plus, they give Fundies and Pharisees the spanking that real Christians are reluctant to do themselves.

What's more important is what they don't contribute:

1. A tax code which exempts the income of their churches, regardless of whether the money is used for lobbying, supporting terrorists or paying judgements against child molestors.

2. Hypocrisy. (Except for their claim to not be True Believers.)

3 A "Morality" that seems to be mostly a set of excuses to do people bad.

4. Constant attempts to overthrow Democracy and recast America in their own Hierarchical image.

5. Blaspheme the Name of God by using it to justify just about any Evil or plain Damnfool thing they take a notion to do.

Some times the things you don't do are more important than the things you do.

Well they like to claim science but there are probably more Christian scientist than atheist ones. I had a nurse that was an atheist once, the worst nurse I ever met. They do contribute diversity of thought and remind us that religion is a personal thing and that even a majority is not enough reason to call it Christmas.

Well probably tons of things. Atheist are humans too. I pretty sure all humans do good deeds. You're referring to them as though they are a different species. Sadly, many believe atheists to be America’s most distrusted minority. (Note: don't get my beliefs confused with others. I am simply stating facts)

The vast majority of our top physicists are atheists.

So atheists contribute to the advancement of science unlike the religious nut jobs that have done everything in their power to stop the progress of science for centuries.

if i have to hear one more generalization about people's religious beliefs...

this question is stupid. atheists are capable of all the same things on an individual level that religious people are capable of. here's one: i'm an atheist, and i went down to mississippi to help out twice after the hurricane. a good person who doesn't believe in god? gasp!! i thought it couldn't be true.

get off it.

Are you asking because yours have been so numerous? Or are you looking for the cause of the moment? Just because their opinions aren't accepted by all doesn't mean they are wrong! Do you worship a god who freely sent a son to be tortured, and murdered, and let him know that this was his purpose in life? That would make him a criminal by present standards wouldn't it. JUDGE NOT LEST YE BE JUDGED!!!!

Come on...atheists can be good, upstanding moral people that contribute to society. Some of them have better values than many Christians I know.

PS I'm a Christian.

The same contributions that non-atheists make...the only contributions they don't make is to a church

I work hard at an honest job, pay my taxes, vote, obey the laws (ok fine, I jaywalk and speed occasionally), and I volunteer at the Red Cross teaching CPR/First Aid and at the local public library reading with children.

How do you contribute?
