When your a married couple, but then want a divorce i always thought that you split the money, bills, etc half-and-half. But a girlfriend of mine is trying to divorce and they have kids, but the kids will be staying mostly with her husband, so does that rule still apply?

that depends on a lot of things...who makes more, who primarily took care of bills before, who has the kids, support and health insurance, were the bills during the marriage or before....and then what the court decides, it will also depend on the reason for the divorce....there is no one answer fits all on this.

The only money that gets split is usually retirement. If they own a house-one of them either takes on the house and all that goes with it or they sell it-then splitting it in half. As far as paying 1/2 the bills after a divorce-doesn't happen. If the kids are going with him she can probably look forward to paying child support too.

All depends on what they agree on. Usually once you get a divorce they will split the bills either 50/50 or assign a certain bill (I am referring to debt- like credit cards, loans, etc.) or it will be stated that the debt holder (the primary on the account or loan) will assume that bill. As far as things like bills for the children the only things that will be split half and half would be medical bills and school expenses (field trips, uniforms, supplies, etc.)

Nope. The marital debts and assets will be divided as the court sees fit, but generally the person with the kids gets more of the assets to help with the support of the kids.

Everything is negotiable.
You could trade off your half of the debt in exchange for no alimony or any combination there of.

However, child support really goes toward the one with the children.
